MajorMUD and DMA Servers...

Post by Shadoron »

Anyone ever setup MMUD on a DMA Server? I've been trying to get everything working for a couple months now, and basically hit a brick wall. Here's a (relatively) quick summary of the back story:

A couple years ago, I bought a used, boxed MajorBBS set from eBay. I figured the price was insanely cheap, and thought it would be fun to poke around with. I've owned a legit copy of Worldgroup since the late 90's, which I've had up and running this whole time. Why not torture myself with MajorBBS again, right? Well, I never really got around to doing anything with it until the beginning of this year. Finally cracking open all the paperwork I received in the box, I landed upon a page from Vircom. It listed codes for the complete Vircom Major TCPIP package, including a DMA Server code. My obsession with getting a DMA Server up and running started off innocently enough. I figured I'd get it running, and host old games that were only available on MajorBBS (like Lords of Cyberspace). After a couple months of experimenting, I did in fact get the DMA Server up, and was able to connect to it via my WG system. Here's where my trouble began. I came up with a pretty cool idea, that required I run MMUD off the DMA Server. Luckily, the MajorBBS set I bought included an old copy of MMUD and Mod1 (even if it didn't, keygens are all over the place now). Now comes the trouble: WCC decided that they weren't going to let Sysops run two copies of MMUD off of one registration (host BBS + DMA Server). They coded in an additional activation key that's needed, if you are going to run MMUD off a DMA Server. In order for WCC to generate that code for you, you needed to sign some legal contract stating you wouldn't run MMUD on your main system anymore (only on the DMA Server); and then you had to send in $100, your BBS reg#, and the STATIC IP address of your DMA Server. WCC would then use the IP and Reg # to generate your MMUD DMA Server code. This caused a bit of a pickle. My MajorBBS version of MMUD did have the DMA activation code, but it was coded to an IP address that I could never own. *Side note - the file wccdma.sys in your MMUD directory contains all the dma server codes that WCC and Metro created. Go check it out, I'll wait.* My legit version of MMUD for my WG system wasn't even listed in the WCCDMA.SYS file, which makes sense... considering I never had a reason to request (and pay Metro another $100 bucks for) the DMA key. I, laughing all the way, attempted to email Metro *giggle* in April... just to see if anyone would even respond. You can guess how that went. I even dug out my old login info for the MMUD Sysop Support forum (It's actually still up!), and did a couple hours of searching to see if there was any info there.

Here's the bottom line: Any one know how to get in touch with Yohan? We need one last Keygen made for MMUD. I'm sorta kidding... but only sorta. There was a BBS in the 2008-2009 time frame that was basically a DMA Server for other BBS's. I know they offered MMUD, which means they must have had a way to generate these codes. Metro was already DOA at this point. And if a BBS wanted to be able to connect to their MMUD game, they would have needed this code to match their IP address.

I've left out a ton of the more technical details surrounding how the DMA Server gets setup, and what exactly you can do with it. I've also simplifed my explaination of WCC's DMA code situation. I figured this post is already waaay too long as is. If you know anything about DMA Servers and MMUD, chime in. If you happen to know anyone related to the DMA BBS from 2008 that I mentioned earlier (I think the name of it was the Hub, or the Game Connection...), please speak up. And if you happen to have any questions (maybe you have a DMA server of your own, and don't know how to set it up), I'm more than happy to help answer them.

Do you know any way to get a DMA server up and running with software available on the internet today? (without needing some official DMA activation key?)

I have been wondering the same thing myself.
