I just tried to install the lair mod again. Alas to no avail. It's monsters. Many different ones.

lair mod does not add new or old monsters it just adds more monsters to regen in rooms that are scripted alot when you add it to your realm just set it to import all for all rooms and maps ignore nmr when it tells about if its ver o or p
if unsure bout things you can try using the preview button first if preview works right you can choose to read the log file then if it all looked good can hit import button

as for the goofy number for this post check the textblocks via nightmare if said goofy number is at end of the textblocks hilite it and copy then in nightmare go to tools click on textblocks then strip chars copy and paste goofy number and that will fix textblocks recompile and run recovery

Yes they were at the ends of text blocks. I told it to trim, It did. The unusual mob was still there. That was the first thing I did.

Can you revert back to before the lair mod? Before you had these weird mobs?

If you can do that then install the lair mod without checking the mobs on the import. Then see if the mobs come back.
