error installing MajorMUD

I keep getting an "unrecoverable error" right after I run the SETUP.EXE file for MajorMUD. It says "INIT: Unable to read value softwarekeyProd". I found a Google Groups post where someone else got an unrecoverable error when they tried to install and they were told to try installing in the WGSERV directory. I tried that (after installing Worldgroup) but I still get the same error.

Windows XP. I'm trying to set it up on Windows 8. I installed Worldgroup on the Windows 8 machine and then tried to install MajorMUD but it said it wasn't compatible with that version of Windows. So I put the MajorMUD installation files onto a flash drive, put the flash drive in an old XP machine, copied over the files into a new directory C:\majormud and tried to run Setup and I got that "unrecoverable error". Then I tried copying my Worldgroup (\WGSERV) folder from the Windows 8 machine to the XP machine and put the MajorMUD installation files in C:\WGSERV. I also tried to put the MajorMUD files in C:\WGSERV\majormud and still got the same "unrecoverable error".

That's what I did. When I run Setup from the MajorMUD files on the XP machine I get that error.

I got it working! It might be that my antivirus was blocking a file when I copied the WGSERV directory from my Windows 8 machine to the flash drive. Either way, this is what I did to get it working. I put the Worldgroup and MajorMUD installation files on a flash drive. I installed a virtual machine player, VMware Player, on my Windows 8 machine and got an iso file of Windows XP. I ran the player and installed XP through it. While running XP on the player, I copied the Worldgroup installer to that environment from the flash drive and installed Worldgroup. I then copied the MajorMUD installer to the WGSERV folder and ran the mud Setup file. After the installation was complete, I copied the entire WGSERV directory to the flash drive. Then I closed the VM Player and copied the WGSERV directory to my C:\ directory in my Windows 8 environment. The setup is explained elsewhere on this website, just search this forum.
