I notice that Worldgroup conveniently doesn't come with a Readme file. What's the best OS to run it on? I have read that it was designed for Windows 95 - which essentially ran on DOS. Could I run DOS in a virtual machine and run Worldgroup in that? What about DOSBox?

I ask because Windows XP is being phased out, and Windows 7 doesn't come with DOS at all and can't run DOS programs. Also I am looking for something cheap (preferably free) to run Worldgroup on. I am thinking about getting a cheap Chromebook, installing Linux on it, and trying to run Worldgroup on that. Anyone have any experience with this?

* I don't necessarily need a walkthrough (though one would help) all I need to know right now is if Worldgroup will run in DOS. If so, I will get the Chromebook and screw around with it when I have the time.

Not sure about your DOS question...I believe Worldgroup is a Windows-based application. It runs great on windows XP/95. It doesn't install well on Windows 7. You can install on a Windows XP machine and move it over to a Windows 7 environment.

PErsonally, I run it in a Windows Server 2008 environement via AWS. The only problem i've experienced is that the Dialsoft control DLL that loads when you start the server won't operate in a Windows Server 2008 or windows 7 environement. It's a real bummer.

wg willl install ok on a win7 it's majormud that has problems might try installing wg and mud to a xp vm then copying from vm to win7 with wg installed on win7 b4 the vm i use a win7 64 bit for my testing and editing of mud with no probs wg will not run on linux via wine

I ended up getting a used Gateway LT4010u netbook. It has a dual-core processor and 2gb of ram in it. I will install Xubuntu Linux on it and run Windows 95 in a virtual machine. I'm hoping I can give the virtual machine 1 processor and 1gb of RAM, which should be enough for Worldgroup. PC's back in the day didn't have powerful processors or this much RAM. I also have a spare 2.5" SSD I can put in it, which should help speed things up.

I was worried about having to buy a new copy of Windows... But Win95 is dirt cheap on Ebay. I got a Win95 box still in shrinkwrap for 17 bucks!

I'm looking forward to getting the netbook. I can't wait to start screwing around with it.

If you have W7 Pro or Ultimate you can D/L XP as a VM for free. Windows Virtual PC I believe it is. WVPC sucks though (it is horribly slow), I would use VMLite Workstation in that instance.
