I'll update this as time goes on because it may not ending being correct but posting this initially before I forget what I just went through...

If you are setting up MegaMUD for the first time, e.g. You haven't added any characters or BBS's, etc...
  1. Install MegaMUD, don't launch it yet.
  2. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Megamud (or wherever you installed it to)
  3. Right-Click on the megamud folder -> Properties -> Security Tab -> Edit -> click on Users (shows as "PCNAME\users") -> Click Full Control box -> OK out of all windows.
  4. Open Megamud folder -> Right-Click on the MegaMUD.exe --> Compatibility Tab --> Change settings for all users --> Run this program ad an administrator --> OK out of all windows.
  5. [Optional] Right click on megamud.exe -> send to -> desktop (create shortcut)
  6. Launch MegaMUD, register it.
  7. Create a new character and save it. Don't bother doing anything, just file -> new, file -> save as.
  8. Close MegaMUD
  9. Run the winterhawks path installer: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=50
  10. Launch MegaMUD
  11. Options -> Game Data -> Paths Tab -> Scan button -> OK to close
    -make sure everything is copacetic.
-i'll update this step as need be
Optional: If you want the MudRev paths (dont do this unless you're playing on a mudrev board)--
  1. Download the zip from here: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=2044
  2. Unzip it to a folder.
  3. Delete the following files, because as of this writing they will yell at you about missing rooms: DGNAA2NA.mp, PTRMSPCW.MP, SPCWPTRM.MP
  4. Copy what's left, and paste it into your megamud directory\Chars\all (C:\Program Files (x86)\Megamud\Chars\All)
  5. In MegaMUD, Options -> Game Data -> Paths Tab -> Scan button -> OK to close
If you already have MegaMUD installed and it's kind of screwed up and/or you want the winterhawks paths/mudrev paths and you want to retain settings...
  • If megamud hasn't beein configured to run as administrator and you are running Windows 8+ (possibly 7 too, not sure), MegaMUD is probably storing your custom settings is a path under your user profile. Check and see if you have this folder: C:\Users\YOURPROFILENAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Megamud and if so, keep that window open.
    1. Close Mega if open
    2. Right-Click on the MegaMUD shortcut and go to Properties --> Compatibility Tab --> Change settings for all users --> Run this program ad an administrator --> OK out of all windows.
    3. Launch MegaMUD. It may look like you launched it for the first time and require you to register it again. Do so.
    4. Close MegaMUD.
    5. Copy everything inside your C:\Users\YOURPROFILENAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Megamud directly into your MegaMUD installation folder (e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Megamud), overwriting as necessary.
    6. Right-Click on the Megamud directory under Program Files and go to properties -> security tab -> edit -> click on Users (shows as "PCNAME\users") -> Click Full Control box -> OK out of all windows.
    7. Launch MegaMUD and hopefully all of your settings are back.
  • install the winterhawk paths (close mega first) using the installer and then optionally the mudrev paths as indicated above.
  • Try out megamud. If it works great. If not, try this:
    1. Back up your BBS and Chars folders
    2. Uninstall megamud,
    3. Delete the folder under program files. Delete this folder if it exists: "C:\Users\YOURPROFILENAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Megamud"
    4. Reinstall megamud
    5. Set it to run as administrator
    6. Launch and register it
    7. Close it down
    8. Install winterhawks paths using installer
    9. copy in your backed up folders.
    10. Launch and pray
    11. install mudrev paths (optional)
NOTES:
  • After megamud scans or at somepoint when opening mega it may complain about room conflicts. Look at option 1 and option 2 and choose to keep the default definition and delete the customized one just for characters.
Moving your MegaMUD installation to a new directory...

Recently I started a new BBS that wasn't mudrev and I found it easier just to move the megamud installation to a new directory as to not screw up the paths that I had worked so hard on fixing. I figured I would create a "Mudrev" megamud install and a regular one.

This assumes you are running megamud as an administrator (as I have indicated above). If you aren't you may need to do that as you want all of your data files/ini under the program files folder and not under your profile. So if you aren't already, do that, make sure everything is still working, and then come back here.

This also assumes you have a current install with a number of edits already. If you wanted to move a non-heavily edits / "good fresh" install, you can follow the same steps, just rename everything something different.
  1. Close megamud
  2. Rename your megamud installation folder (e.g. I renamed "Program Files (x86)\Megamud" to "Program Files (x86)\Megamud_Mudrev")
  3. Right-Click on the megamud.exe and set it to run as administrator again.
  4. go into the "chars" folder and edit your character INI files. You'll need to do a search and replace-all for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Megamud" to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Megamud_Mudrev". Repeat that for all of your character INI files.
  5. Rename your shortcuts (start menu / desktop / etc) from "MegaMUD" to "MegaMUD Mudrev"
  6. Go into the properties of those shortcuts and change the path to point to the renamed folder
  7. Also check to make sure they are set to run MegaMUD as administrator while you are in there
  8. Follow the instructions above for "MegaMUD for the first time." Make sure you set it to run as administrator, edit the security, and install winterhawk's paths.

Years ago when I last played, there was a method for adding/referencing a specific character .ini file in the MegaMUD shortcut that would essential load the program with the character open. I found this post while searching for it (and I ended up installing the path updates so thank you!) and thought that you might have as good a chance of knowing as anybody!

Thanks!

Update: I got it! All it takes is adding -i "C:\..." with the rest of the path to the desired character .ini after the megamud.exe shortcut. Each path should be enclosed by its own quotations.

Something you might want to add is the regkey location. This is helpful when moving the folder, since it has a folder key in it.

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\GWiz\MegaMud

Never heard of an issue with registering. Explain the issue and we can see if we know anything.

if using the keygen it writes a file to folder keygen is in then copy/paste top line into megamud make sure you type name you used for keygen in megamud. also make sure your typing correct number from megamud into keygen
