Re: Windows 8
It will run in Windows 8, but I don't think you can run the installation file in Windows 8.
You can install Worldgroup and MajorMUD on a Windows XP machine and copy the whole WGSERV directory to a flash drive and then over to your Windows 8 machine. If you don't have a Windows XP machine available you can download a virtual machine program like VMWare Player (from download.com) and then download a Windows XP iso file. Install the virtual machine program and tell it to use your Windows XP iso file and it will install Windows XP in a virtual environment. It takes a while because you are actually going through the whole operating system installation process. When that's done you can install Worldgroup while in Windows XP and then put the MajorMUD installation file in the WGSERV directory and run it in there. Then copy the whole WGSERV directory to a flash drive while you're still in XP. Now you have a copy of MMUD and WG that should run on any version of Windows.
It would be a big favor to the MUD community if someone could host a download of the finished WGSERV directory so that people could avoid this cumbersome procedure.

Re: Windows 8
Just copying to WGSERV directory seems like it would result in an incomplete installation. It wouldn't have any of the pervasive/btrieve engine registered with the system.
Re: Windows 8
It definitely works when you do it this way...
1. Install Worldgroup in a Windows XP environment.
2. Install MajorMUD in the WGSERV directory that results from the Worldgroup installation in XP.
3. Copy the full WGSERV directory from the XP environment to your Windows 8 machine.
Just curious, though... What does that mean, the pervasive/btrieve engine?
